I JUST FINISHED SEASON 1 AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH????? I mean, I DID have my suspicions but I really just chalked it up to Michael being an incompetent snooze and the hot demnon who wanted to bang everyone (don't know his name) being a ... bad demon but WOAH. I AM SO .... there aren't even words for it!!!!!
I was so ticked at my husband - he called it sometime in the first two or three episodes. But he also called the twist in Sixth Sense almost immediately too; it seems to be his superpower.
HOW did he call it tho?? I kind of thought it was weird that a) big sexy demon whose name I don't know just revealed the "real Eleanor" AFTER the train was stopped and also b) that "real Eleanor" came barging in trying to sacrifice herself in the last episode because... how the fuck would she have known????? It wasn't like broadcast everywhere?! I guess what really should have ticket anyone off was the fact that all these good people were just like "yay life in heaven" instead of "holy fuck all these poor souls who get tortured for eternity"... like even Chidi didn't think about it and there are plenty of philosophers out there thinking about this kind of thing.
I also wonder how especially Tahani was tortured (except by each other) - we know that Eleanor was tortured by the fact that everyone was better than her, Chidi was faced with many decisions that were absolutely impossible for him to decide, and Jason was forced to still not be able his true self. But Tahani? Maybe the fact that, like in real life, no matter how perfect she tried to be it still wasn't enough?
I DON'T KNOW HOW HE DOES IT, other than having a vague sense of "what would be the most awesome plot twist they could have without just throwing their narrative structure out the window." He's magic.
...and then the show made a way to throw its narrative structure out the window within the confines of its narrative structure, what even is this show.
And Tahani - I'm thinking back to the scene where she checked out the points list and was very disappointed that she wasn't on top? her parties were routinely ruined? and also having Jason as her soulmate must have been excruciating; initially he wouldn't talk while she is a chatterbox, and then he turned out to be... him.
(I asked Hubby what made him suspect, and he said it was basically Michael? he was a little too sickly-sweet to Eleanor while at the same time kind of mean to Chidi and Tahani? Daughter also thought it was too much of a coincidence that there were two people who supposedly slipped through the cracks of a foolproof system.)
only 4 episodes. but we're back home right now and we plan to watch... as long as we fall asleep basically xD
I didn't get any spoilers for this show (except for some random gif sets on tumblr but those were just funny lines) so yeah.. I honestly wonder if we are going to see the real Eleanor or if she didn't die or what?
Episode 4 is exactly where I knew I'd be following this show right up to the end. The initial episodes were a great hook, but the revelation about Jianyu was the first twist that blindsided me with delight. I'm vicariously excited that you've managed to stay unspoiled!
IT'S FORKING FANTASTIC. I laughed so hard at the first few episodes I binged the rest. Just watched the newest one AND I AM SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW. Won't say why for spoilers.
But I'm AMAZED they made an entire show about moral philosophy and it's not just good but fricking popular as hell. I didn't realise till I read it somewhere that every episode (mostly) asks a specific moral/ethical question as part of the plot and then answers it. I mean. Like. THAT IS INCREDIBLE. It makes people think without shoving it down our throats.
Plus Tehani is hot as hell and I'm thrilled that Jameela Jamil insists on not letting them hide her stretch marks. I actually literally hit pause the first time I realised and just marvelled because idk it made me feel like I'm not alone, and if someone that stunning has stretch marks, it maybe really doesn't matter so much? too much information there, sorry. I love Jameela, so much.
I loved the fact that it's about morals! But they also show the back story of the characters so it's not just "hey this person sucks duh" - you get to know why they are that way. and they all have their own problems, even the perfect ones. it's awesome and just tackles so many important things without being in your face about it
She's talked a bit lately about how it causes... she didn't use the word "dysphoria" but that seemed to be what she was describing... to see her image everywhere airbrushed into perfection and not see that in the mirror. She is absolutely my new fave.
I've read it, sounds like dysphoria to me. I had a pic of myself airbrushed once just to see and it was horrifying, I had trouble looking in the mirror for weeks.
this is awesome!! I love that... I fucking hate photoshopping the "wrong" parts of your body. and I guess you can totally call it dysphoria. I think I've read somewhere that when they were dressing people up as their opposite gender (with convincing make up and hair do and such) they were also really uncomfortable. It works with cis people too just .. the other way round I guess ^^
It's SO GOOD. I'm amazed how much they manage to do with what is basically a sitcom. It just keeps reinventing itself and surprising you, and somehow manages to say really smart things about morality almost every week while also being very funny. It's wonderful!
